Getabu, A..
Gut content analysis of Oreochromis niloticus from the Nyanza Gulf, Lake Victoria showed that the bulk of the food items ingested constituted bottom deposits and blue green algae. Among the live food items ingested, blue green algae (Cyanophyceae) constituted 53.6%, the diatoms (Bacillariophyaceae) 19.7%, aquatic invertebrates (mainly Copepoda, Cladocera, and Rotifera) 12.9%, desmids (Desmidaceae) 7.7% and lastly the green algae (Chlorophyceae) 6.2%. The most preferred food items were: Spirulina laxisma and Nitzschia accicularis. The least preferred food items were: Lyngbya circumcreta, Microcystis aeruginosa and Pediastrum simplex. The quantity of food eaten by O. niloticus to satiation ranged from 0.016-4.5% body...

A habitat-based simulation framework to design tag-recapture experiments for tunas in the Indian Ocean. Application to the skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) population. OceanDocs
Olivier, M.A.Y..
The IOTC initiated a discussion to organize a large scale tagging program concerning the major tropical tuna species and fisheries. According to the terms of reference for the working party on tagging (Anon., 1999), prospective simulations are needed to help designing tag -recapture experiments. The purpose of this paper is to present the methodology developed to help designing the future tagging program. It is based on three stages: tag recovery simulations with an habitat -based advection-diffusion-reaction model; bootstrapping of the recovery data sets; population parameter estimation and comparison of scenarii. Different scenarii are studied to check the reliability of the method and its ability to compare various t agging experimental designs....

ACP-EU Fisheries Research Initiative. OceanDocs
This report presents the papers discussed at an EC/INCO-DC-sponsored international workshop ‘Markets, Global Fisheries and Local Development’ held on March 22 and 23, 1999 at the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI), Bergen, Norway. The main objective of the workshop was to initiate a debate on how markets impact on global fisheries, and how these in turn impact on the ability of developing fishing nations to improve the welfare of their citizens. The motivation for the workshop stems from the observation that over time two things have happened to the world’s fishing sector. First, through improvement in fishing technology and the activities of distant water fishing fleets, fish exploitation and harvest have become global. Second, with significant technological...

The present report contains the proceedings of the INCO-DEV International Workshop on Information Systems for Policy and Technical Support in Fisheries and Aquaculture, convened in Los Baños, Philippines, 5 -7 June 2000. It was convened to address issues associated with the difficult transition from abundance to scarcity in aquatic resources. Reliable information will spread the right perception of the productive capacity and result in more realistic assessment of decreasing benefits and rising costs. Conservation of aquatic biodiversity, ecosystem approaches to fisheries and aquaculture production and food quality and safety along the entire chain from production to the consumer are key concepts that will govern approaches to aquatic living resources in...

African Aquaculture: A Regional Summary with Emphasis on Sub-Saharan Africa OceanDocs
Moehl, J.; Machena, C..
The African Region consists of 48 countries and five island nations, most of which are practising some form of aquaculture, often at a very low level. Over half the countries report producing less than 100 mt annually. The largest producer is Nigeria (17 700 mt) followed by Madagascar (5 100 mt) and Zambia (4 700 mt). The 1997 combined aquaculture production of the region was 40 300 mt. Aquaculture is estimated to be 95 percent small scale, with fish ponds integrated into the mosaic of agricultural activities. Mean yield is approximated as 500 kg/ha/yr, although the range is wide, from less than a hundred to more than 10 000 kg/ha/yr. A typical scenario would be a 300 m2 pond producing 15 kg a year relying on family labour and on-farm inputs. There is...

African Fisheries: Major Trends and Diagnostic of the 20th Century OceanDocs
Njock, J.C.; Njifonjou, O..
The marine fisheries production from African coastal countries, combined with that of freshwater production of the continent is estimated to be 6 millions metric tons, corresponding only 5 % of the total world production. Africa's contribution to fisheries products (1,5 %) is insignificant compared to that of world commerce which is around 44 millions tons. This deplorable situation is due to a certain number of problems which include s among others, the relative biogenic poverty of African waters, the exploitation of African waters by foreign vessels, the total lack of catches effected by the African vessels out of their regional boundaries, the lack of knowledge on the mastering of commercialisation and on veritable commercial politics of fisheries...

An integrated river basin planning approach – Nyando case study in Kenya OceanDocs
Njogu, A.K..
The river basin has long been acknowledged as the appropriate unit of analysis for water resources management and has also been named by the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED 1992) as the logical unit for integrated water resources management in Agenda 21, chapter 18. The comprehensive methodology framework for analysis structures the decision making process, starting with the problem identification, through the weighing of various options to the final selection of the most appropriate policy. The integrated planning approach methodology is applied to the 3600 km2 Nyando river basin in western Kenya, one of the sub-basins that drain into Lake Victoria in Eastern Africa. Statistical methods used to check the adequacy and...

An Ocean Theme for the IGOS Partnership OceanDocs
The Integrated Global Observing Strategy Partnership (IGOS-P) established, in 1999, a thematic approach to the implementation of the IGOS. Recognising that other themes will emerge, the “Ocean Theme” was chosen to be the “pathfinder” in this approach and an Ocean Theme Team was assembled to formulate guidance. One goal of the Ocean Theme Team is to consider and study the full range of current and planned observations, while identifying potential gaps in future observations that might compromise ocean observational records. This document presents a proposed set of long-term ocean observations and identifies a number of challenges for the improvement of knowledge about both the oceans and observing techniques. The overall strategy is to create an observing...

Analysis and prediction of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) catch rates of longline fisheries in the western Indian Ocean using a neural network. OceanDocs
Nishida, T.; Komatsu, T..
Strengthening tuna management is one of the primary tasks for the new Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC). Stock assessment and the prediction of the dynamics of the tuna resources will become increasingly important research topics because they provide the basic information for the management decision process. Under these circumstances, this paper attempts to develop the stock analyses and prediction techniques using neural networks. As a first step and as a test study, analyses and predictions of catch rates of the Japanese yellowfin tuna longline fisheries are attempted.

Analysis of small-scale movements of yellowfin tuna around fish-aggregating devices (FADS) using sonic tags OceanDocs
Marsac, F.; Cayré, P.; Conand, F..
The ongoing ultrasonic experiments of phase 2 of the Regional Tuna Project (Commission de l'Ocean Indien) are reported and analysed in relation to the local environmental parameters. Although 7 yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) were tagged during the first 3 cruises of the project, only 5 of them are considered in this paper, as they were tracked around FADs. Seasonal trends affect the horizontal movements associated with FADs: strong association and homing behaviour during the fishing season vs. weaker association when the fishing season comes to an end and the fish start migrating from the area. The vertical movements are analysed in order to provide a typology of the distribution of tuna in relation to different features (FAD association by day and at...

Apatite Fission Track Analysis of Sites 959 and 960 on the Transform Continental Margin of Ghana, West Africa OceanDocs
Carter, A.; Clift, P.D.; Hurford, A.J..
Four samples of sandstone from deformed Aptian–Albian sediments and their less deformed Turonian cover at Sites 959 and 960 on the Côte d’Ivoire-Ghana Marginal Ridge yielded sufficient apatite for fission track analysis. Reduced mean track length values of 12.42 ± 0.16 μm to 13.67 ± 0.11 μm indicate that measured central ages, which range from 88 ± 4 Ma to 113 ± 4 Ma, have undergone partial resetting and are therefore apparent ages. Stochastic modeling of the fission track age and length parameters indicate that the samples have a strong predepositional signal, slightly modified by minor levels of prolonged postdepositional annealing (maximum temperatures <80°C). The preserved provenance-related signal records cooling through the apatite partial...

Arrecifes de coral: un potencial económico, turístico y educacional OceanDocs
Olaechea-Juárez, A.; González, E.; Guitart-Pérez-Puelles, B..
